1. Proestrus :

- Duration: Approximately 7 to 10 days.    - Symptoms: Swelling of the vulva, bloody discharge, attraction to males, but the female dog will not be receptive.

2.Estrus :

- Duration: Approximately 5 to 10 days.
- Symptoms: The female dog is receptive to males, and the discharge may become lighter. This is the fertile period.

3. Metestrus (ou Diestrus) :

   - Duration: Approximately 60 days.
- Symptoms: The dog will no longer be receptive. If she is pregnant, this is the gestation period. Otherwise, she is preparing for a new cycle.

4. Anestrus :

- Duration: Variable, can last several months.
- Symptoms: Rest period between cycles, with not sign of menstrual period.

Age of first menstrual period

The first menstrual period usually occurs between 6 and 12 months, depending on the breed and size of the dog. Smaller breeds may come into heat earlier than larger breeds.

Cycle Frequency

Female dogs typically have two menstrual cycles per year, but this can vary. Some may have more or less frequent cycles.

Behavior During the Cycle

- Behavioral Changes :

Female dogs may become more affectionate or, on the contrary, more agitated.

- Urine marking:

Some female dogs may urinate more frequently to mark their territory.

Menstrual cycle management

- Protection :

Use dog panties or pads to prevent stains in the house.

- Monitoring:

Keep an eye on your female dog to avoid unwanted matings.

Spaying

Spaying is an option to consider to prevent unwanted menstruation and litters. It also has health benefits, such as reducing the risk of certain diseases.

Conclusion

Understanding the menstrual cycle in female dogs is essential for owners. By being informed and taking appropriate measures, you can help your dog get through this period comfortably and safely. Don't hesitate to consult your veterinarian for additional advice on heat management and spaying.
